Exceptional quality, functionality and features of the flagship of the Sigma’s Sports lineDesigned to minimize focus breathing

Combines high robustness and mobility
The lens barrel is made of magnesium alloy for the main parts and the hood is made of carbon, achieving both high robustness and light weight. In addition, the optical design with the center of gravity toward the camera greatly improves the weight balance, which tends to be front-heavy.The lens has been designed to suppress focus breathing. The change in angle of view due to focus shift is minimized, creating a natural-looking focus shift when recording video.

Thermal insulation paint for perfect lens performance

New function ring adds extended functionality

The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports features a newly added function ring that further expands the options of the lens. The focus ring offers two different modes, selected via its setting switch:

Focus Preset Mode:

By turning the function ring to the left or right, the focus can be instantly shifted to a pre-registered focus position. This is useful when frequently shooting at a fixed focus position.

Power Focus Mode:

Focusing at a constant speed is possible by operating the function ring. This allows for smooth focus shift during movie shooting as well as for focusing with minimal movement when shooting hand-held. Focusing speed can be changed in two steps depending on the angle at which the function ring is operated.

Durable and easy-to-handle tripod socket

The tripod socket's rotating mechanism uses bearings for both high durability and smooth rotation with an optional click/declick mechanism for each 90° angle to assist in accuracy. The tripod socket foot is compatible with Arca-Swiss type clamps, but can be easily removed and replaced with different interchangeable tripod sockets (available separately) to suit a variety of situations and preferences.

Equipped with a drop-in filter holder

The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports features a drop-in filter holder for standard ø40.5mm filters. In addition, Sigma has developed a new drop-in circular polarizing filter and a variable ND filter (available separately) that can be adjusted by approximately 7-stops while dropped into the lens. The latest optical and mechanical design streamlines the lens configuration and internal structure, resulting in a significantly smaller and lighter body than the previous Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Sports model. The body, including the hood, features a “multi-material structure” that optimally arranges materials such as magnesium, CFRP*1, and TSC*2. Even with enhanced mobility, the lens features Sigma’s renowned excellent build quality, including high durability, reliable rigidity, and various control rings and switches that have been carefully designed to feel good.

*1 CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic), a light but strong material used in the interior and exterior fittings of aircraft, among many other applications.

*2 TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) is a type of polycarbonate with a thermal expansion rate similar to that of aluminum. It has high affinity to metal parts which contributes to high quality product manufacturing.

Weatherability of Sigma’s Sports line specifications

The mount joints, manual focus ring, zoom ring, custom switches and other control switches, and exterior joints are all protected from dust and splash by a dust- and splash-resistant structure*. Further, the frontmost surface of the lens is coated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to facilitate maintenance when water droplets or dust adhere to the lens.

Weatherability of Sports line specifications

The mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, switches, switch panel and exterior connection are all dust and splash resistant* to prevent dust and dirt from entering the lens. Further, the front element of the lens features a water and oil repellent coating to facilitate maintenance when water droplets or dust adhere to the lens.

*The structure is designed to be dust and splash resistant, but not waterproof. Be careful not to bring the lens in contact with a large amount of water. Water inside the lens may cause major damage and even render the lens unrepairable.

Various functions to support shooting

The lens features a variety of buttons and switches to accommodate individual preferences and the demands of different shooting situations, including AFL buttons in four different locations, a focus mode switch, a focus limiter switch, an OS mode switch (Mode 1 or Mode 2), and a custom mode switch. The L-Mount version of the lens is also compatible with Tele Converters (TC-1411/TC-2011) for AF-enabled shooting at a maximum focal length of 1,200mm.

MTF CHART

The MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) is one of the measurements for evaluating a lens’ performance, and it shows how faithfully the contrast of the subject can be reproduced on the image plane. The horizontal axis shows the image height (distance from the center of the image in mm) and the vertical axis shows the contrast value (maximum value is 1).
The closer the 10 line pairs/mm curve is to 1, the higher the contrast and clarity of the lens is, and similarly, the closer the 30 line pairs/mm curve is to 1, the better the resolution and sharpness of the lens is.

*The MTF chart depicts the result at the wide-open aperture.
*For mirrorless lenses that support distortion correction, the horizontal axis shows the image height equivalent to when an L-Mount lens is attached to a Sigma L-Mount camera with distortion correction applied. (The effect of distortion correction may differ depending on the mount and camera used.)
*The spatial frequency indicates the variation on the image plane before distortion correction is performed.

HLA (High-response Linear Actuator)

HLA is Sigma's proprietary linear motor. It drives the focus lens directly without going through gears or other mechanical parts, resulting in quiet, high-precision autofocusing.

Inner focus system

To increase stability, this lens configuration uses movable internal lens elements that adjust focus without changing the length of the lens barrel.

OS2

OS2 is the newly developed optical stabilizer algorithm. Compared to the previous algorithm used by Sigma lenses, OS2 improves the effect of optical stabilization significantly.

Inner Zoom

The lens incorporates an inner zoom. With their unchanging barrel length, these lenses also enhance balance and stability for the photographer. Furthermore, since the front of the lens does not rotate, polarizing filters can be used with extra convenience.

Nano Porous Coating

"NPC (Nano Porous Coating)" incorporates porous silica as the coating material. The porous silica layer has nano-sized holes with air inside. Having holes of this size enables a large reduction in the refractive index, allowing the reflectance to be lowered more than conventional anti-reflective coatings. As a result, reflected light causing flares and ghosting is sharply reduced, achieving clear image quality.

Water and oil repellent coating

Incorporates a water and oil-repellent coating that allows water to be wiped away easily and prevents oil and fat from sticking to the surface, even in challenging shooting conditions. At the same time, the maintenance of the lens surface becomes easier.

AFL button

the AFL button can be assigned with various functions widens the range of operations available on the lens.

Focus Mode Switch

Using this swich, it is possible to switch the focus mode between AF and MF.

Focus Limiter Switch

Offers customization for the driving range of auto focus. It makes it possible to limit the drive range from a specific distance to a long distance or a short distance.

Custom Mode Switch

Function Ring

The focus ring offers two different modes, selected via its setting switch

Dust and Splash Resistant Structure

This lens features a highly effective dust and splash resistant structure with special sealing at the mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, and cover connection.

*Although this construction allows the lens to be used in light rain, it is not the same as being waterproof, so please prevent large amounts of water from splashing on the lens. It is often impractical to repair the internal mechanism, lens elements and electric components if they are damaged by water.

Linear focus / Non-linear focus (for L-Mount only)Aperture ring

A focus movement method of interchangeable lenses for mirrorless cameras (DN lens) in relation to the rotational angle of the focus ring during manual focusing.
With "non-linear focus," the amount of focal point movement varies depending on the focus ring rotational speed.
With linear focus, if the focus ring rotational angle is the same, the amount of focal point movement remains the same regardless of the focus ring rotational speed.

Super Multi-Layer Coating

Sigma's own Super Multi-Layer Coating suppresses flare and ghosting by preventing reflections with in the lens. All lenses in the current Sigma range feature this original technology. In digital cameras, flare and ghosting may also be caused by reflections between the image sensor and lens surfaces. Here too, Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating is highly ef fective, assuring images of outstanding contrast.

Compatible with Lens Aberration Correction

Matching the optical characteristics of the lens, this function performs in-camera corrections of peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, distortion, and more, to further enhance image quality.

*Function available on supported cameras only. Available corrections or auto correction functionality may vary depending on the camera model.

*On cameras where lens aberration correction is controlled with 'ON' or 'OFF' in the camera menu, please set all aberration correction functions to 'ON'(AUTO).

Rounded diaphragm

The polygonal shape of a conventional iris diaphragm causes out-of-focus light points to appear polygonal. A rounded diaphragm is designed to produce rounded out-of-focus light points when opened to near maximum aperture. This creates attractive bokeh effects in many situations, such as when photographing a subject against an out-of-focus surface of water from which light is being reflected.

High-precision, rugged brass bayonet mount

The brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction. Its treated surfaces and enhanced strength contribute to the exceptional durability of the lens.
